Hashtags in the Fediverse: You don't need to put them everywhere! π
"The more hashtags I use, the more people will see my post!"
In reality... it's not that simple. π
A hashtag isn't just decoration. It's a way to categorize your post so that people following or searching for that topic can discover it.
As the official Mastodon documentation explains:
"You can use a hashtag to make your post discoverable to anyone searching for that hashtag."
In other words, every hashtag should have a purpose.
Here's a fun example:
You post a photo of your cat sleeping peacefully on the couch.
Do you really need something like this?
#Cat #Kitten #Cute #Animals #Couch #LivingRoom #Sunday #Nap #Fluffy #Home #Photography #Earth #Planet #Life #Morning #Coffee #Happy #Smile π€―
Probably not. π
Instead, something as simple as:
#Cats #Photography #Pets
already describes your post perfectly and helps the right people find it.
The goal isn't to use the most hashtagsβit's to use the right ones.
Hashtags are designed to connect people with shared interests, not to turn your post into a wall of keywords. π
