@moriel@chaosfem.tw @leeloo@c.im I think "huge" might be an understatement, too. To my knowledge, all fonts are rendered(in all their supported variants, sizes, writing systems, and cases) before being loaded on your system. To have each font support everything would be gigabytes of data per font.

@leeloo@c.im @moriel@chaosfem.tw So... this got me thinking. Modularity, interchangeability, and reductionism are key aspects of my design language, so I started thinking about how the glyphs would be created.

Theoretically, you could program font designing software to recognize paths, directionality, and points(or nodes) and create a single model that is just a wireframe representation of all characters, then define fonts thru an SVG equivalent spec that is linked to the individual parts of the wireframe model. You would then theoretically have to create rulesets for each individual language that changed how the spec was applied to each individual part. This would - based on my understanding of the arabic numerals, latin letters and characters(tho accents&/diacritics might need a special designation/ruleset), and Japanese writing systems - give you the ability to have language accurate presentations of the same font in all the languages that use those systems, possibly Chinese, and maybe a few other Chinese derived languages.

Asuming you could get enough people together to cover the rulesets of writing in every writing system and accounting for language specific modifications of each system, you could then turn this over to artists that would design the individual fonts. I donnae know if typesetters would do this themselves, or if how teams would have to sit around and decide what a serif is, but they'd be able to define a font and the program would spit out a single uniform font across all languages.

The issues I see are: Even within a single language the smallest, simplest character set often has many character specific rules that change how the font is rendered and they are different in every font. Aditionally, some font designers very purposefully add none uniformity to a lot of the characters in there fonts that cannae reasonable be converted to rules - those would still have to go thru the months and years long process to be created that fonts currently do. Lastly, I understand two languages' writing systems exceptionally well, but wouldnae claim to understand either of them completely - I cannae begin to assume anything about arabic lettering, hangul, cyrillic or any of the other writing systems I havenae mention, much less the changes to those systems created by the many languages that use them.
